Journalist Safety Blog-n-Roll

Our Complete Blog & Roll List School Violence & Prevention Gang Violence Personal Security Training

latest news on journalist safetyJournalism is not always a safe profession. It's one thing to be reporting on sports or weather events, it is entirely different when reporting upon conflicts and corruption. The majority of journalists who have been killed on the job, or in connection with they were reporting upon, were killed in either active combat zones or reporting on corruption. Iraq has been, and continues to be, the single most dangerous country in the world for journalists. Iraq is by no means the only place where journalists have been killed - Mexico and Russia are also hostile climates, particularly for anyone investigating corruption and crime. It's rounded out by a long list of countries in South America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, with Africa being less hostile than one would expect despite conditions in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe and Somalia.

safe reporting in conflict zones What we would like to do with this Blog-n-Roll is develop a resource for journalists to help with pre-deployment planning of materials, equipment and information you might consider before getting on the plane to cover the most recent outbreak. If you will be embedded with the military, you are likely to get training with them, too. Independent journalists going into hotspots on their own, however, are not likely to receive anywhere near the kind of safety, support and protection.

Likewise, if you are covering cases of crime and corruption, perform a risk assessment. Casual coverage of a situation is not going to lead you into trouble, but fact finding missions, investigating specific people, cartels and other crime groups exponentially increases the threat to your personal safety.
