It is almost surreal writing about the State of Michigan and the crisis developing there. We don't live there, but what has happened and continues to develop in Detroit is spreading throughout the United States. It is part of ongoing self-feeding cycle of unemployment, credit/mortgage defaults for home owners, small and even big business. This applies to government tax revenue impacting budgets requiring cuts backs in education, state services, police. It factors into crime, as well. The unemployed should not be victimized any more than they have already been. The entire American automotive industry is collapsing. The financial crisis is here, and we all need to adjust to the new reality. This video, Quick Policy Crime Analysis for Brightmoor, Detroit - was produced by Lauren and Ramona of Wayne State University. It is a logical and nicely developed approach to solving the problems of one small community within Detroit. They are using a combination of SWOT and PEST analysis to produce a simple, but effective evaluation of possible remedies in crime prevention: no changes? more police? street lighting? community watch? Lauren and Ramon's conclusion was that community watches would be the most efficient and cost-effective approach. They determined street lighting would not play a significant role, because relying upon statistics, they found that most burglaries were taking place during daylight hours. More and more states are encountering shortfalls on their budgets due to declining personal incomes, growing unemployement and property devaluations. Increasingly, it will be necessary for communities to work together to come up with their own solutions and maximize the resources they have. This is essentially the conclusion we've reached in our own analysis, too. More and more experts are promoting the same - working together at the neighborhood and community level. As is becoming increasingly apparent, if you depend upon the government to solve problems for you - it's likely to not be what you need or want, will be too little and too late. It's not a matter of fear mongering or being negative. Hope is not a strategy. Expecting others to help you when there are problems everywhere is an exercise in folly. It's necessary to take steps on a personal and local level to provide for your own security. Government is essentially having to choose between cuts to education or police and prison budgets. California plans on releasing 27,000 inmates; Illinois has announced plans to release 10,000 inmates. Gang crime is steadily increasing, too. We need to be aware of what is going on and we need to take such action that we reasonably can. In starting this blog on July 24, 2009, we will be adding to it on a regular basis as we come across more information and resources that may be helpful to you.
